Why Moisture Is the Real Enemy of Every Siding Job
Most siding failures people blame on "old age" are actually water problems. Paint fades because of UV. Boards rot, panels delaminate, and walls develop that musty smell because water got in and had nowhere to go. In Birch Bay, that risk is higher than in most parts of Washington. Why Birch Bay's Climate Makes This Worse

What Moisture Damage Actually Looks Like
You don't need to pull siding off the wall to spot early warning signs. Walk your home's exterior a couple times a year and look for these:

Not All Siding Materials Handle Moisture the Same Way

Wood and Engineered Wood Products
Primed spruce, cedar, and engineered wood siding all rely on an intact factory or field-applied coating to keep water out. Wood is organic material — once water gets past the coating and into the substrate, it doesn't just sit there, it feeds rot and, in the case of engineered wood products, can cause the board to swell and lose structural integrity at cut edges and butt joints. These products can perform well for years with excellent maintenance, but they demand it: regular repainting, caulk inspection, and prompt repair of any nicks or gouges in the coating. In a salt-air, high-rainfall environment, that maintenance window shrinks.
Vinyl Siding
Vinyl itself doesn't rot because it's not organic, but it isn't a moisture barrier — water runs behind it constantly by design, which means whatever is behind it (housewrap, sheathing, framing) is doing the real work of keeping your walls dry. Vinyl also expands and contracts significantly with temperature swings, which over time can open gaps at overlaps and trim. It holds up reasonably well against rain itself, but it does very little to protect the structure behind it if the underlying barrier fails, and repeated wind events common on the waterfront can stress panel attachment over time.
Fiber Cement
Fiber cement is made from cement, sand, and cellulose fibers — an inorganic composition that doesn't rot, swell, or provide a food source for mold the way wood-based products can. It still needs to be installed with proper flashing, clearances, and a drainage plane, because no siding material is exempt from correct water management. But the material itself tolerates incidental moisture exposure — a missed caulk joint, a period of standing snow at the base of a wall — far better than wood-based alternatives, which is a meaningful advantage in a climate like this one.

What Correct Installation Looks Like, Regardless of Material
Material choice only gets you halfway. The other half is installation that actually manages water instead of just covering the wall. On every siding job, this is non-negotiable:
- Housewrap or weather-resistive barrier installed and lapped correctly, shingle-style, top over bottom
- Flashing at every horizontal transition — window heads, doors, trim boards, roof-to-wall intersections
- Minimum clearance maintained between siding and grade, decks, patios, and roof lines (typically 6 inches or more)
- Butt joints and seams caulked with a quality, flexible exterior sealant rated for the material
- Proper fastener type, spacing, and depth per manufacturer specifications
- A drainage gap or rainscreen where conditions call for it
If a contractor can't clearly explain how they're handling flashing and clearances on your specific home, that's worth pausing on before signing anything.
Living With Moss Season in Whatcom County
Even the best siding and installation won't stop moss and algae from wanting to grow on a shaded, damp exterior wall in this climate. What you can control is how much moisture that growth traps against the surface over time. A few practical habits help:
- Keep gutters clear so water isn't sheeting down the wall face
- Trim back vegetation and tree cover that keeps a wall shaded and damp longer than necessary
- Rinse visible moss or algae buildup before it thickens, using a soft wash rather than high-pressure spray that can drive water behind seams
- Check downspout discharge points to make sure they're not saturating the ground near the foundation
When to Have Someone Take a Closer Look
Not every stain or streak means you need new siding. But a few situations are worth a professional inspection sooner rather than later: soft spots you can press in with a thumb, recurring interior moisture or musty odors along an exterior wall, visible gaps that have opened up at trim or joints, or siding that's more than 20-25 years old and hasn't been inspected in the last few years. Catching a moisture problem while it's still localized is a repair. Catching it after it's spread through the wall cavity is a much bigger project.
